Hello friends, I hope ya’ll are having a good week. It has FINALLY cooled off some here in Kentucky and thank goodness!! October is here and that brings us to all the fall things. I really love fall, those really are my best colors.😉😉 HeHe! But in all honesty I really love the cozy clothes and food that accompanies the cooler weather. I don’t like to be cold but the crispness in the air marks my favorite time of year.
Fall is also a good time for movie night and is anything better this time of year than the 1993 Kenny Ortega classic Hocus Pocus?? Family friendly and funny as can be with a song by the Divine Miss M, it’s candy coated fun!!! (Can you tell I’m a fan?) Every great movie night needs corresponding snacks so I’ve gathered our spooky offerings to share with you here. Of course we have good ol’ Pinterest to give us some ideas and I’ll link back to the sites I used but on a side note, there is some pretty gross Halloweeny food items out there! YUCK!!! I don’t do scary and am not a big fan of gross so this is fairly tame stuff I’m going to share with ya’ll.
If you’ve seen the movie you know part of the story line is three ancient witches are brought back to life when the “blackflame candle” is lit on all Hallows’ eve. So we begin with our Blackflame Candle Cupcakes with devils food cake and buttercream icing. You can also see in the picture the “witches brooms of mini Reese cups and stick pretzels. I drew the flame on yellow card stock, added the black center to the flame, cut them out and attached to toothpicks. TADA!!! I will confess I cheated and used box cake mix and it was WRETCHED!!! Never again, friends never again.
Another snippet from the movie is when sister Sarah retrieves her lucky rat’s tail. I thought these black licorice Twizzlers filled in nicely, although the licorice flavor was not a favorite among our movie goers.
I’d like to credit the Pinterest source for these but there’s about a dozen different posts on spellbook brownies. It’s a simple brownie with cookie icing and candy eye to represent the spellbook.
Every good spell has a dead man’s toe, right?!? I pondered and pondered on this one… finally coming up with little smokies. Cutting each and every one to look like it had knuckles and a nailbed (I had help, thanks Ash!). Yeah, they kinda look like stubby fingers but coming up with a savory snack food to look like a toe ain’t easy!! This sauce recipe is about as old as the witches in the story, its simply one cup of grape jelly and one cup of your favorite BBQ sauce. Toss those 2 ingredients along with your little smokes in the crockpot on low and there ya go, dead man’s toes with toes jam (I know, gross but I couldn’t help myself).
This Halloween Harvest Chex mix will be on repeat at my house as often as I can get away with it. I’m gonna spare you my pic, her’s is way prettier. So yummy with the candy corn, Reese’s Pieces, pretzels just all the things. Salty-sweet is the BEST.
We also had purple punch, because all parties need punch and purple is just perfect for punch, don’t you think? This one was really simple and good. It’s frozen concentrate lemonade and grape juice and 2 cups of water, mix that well and add Sprite. I made the juice concoction and added the sprite to the glass to top it off, it was wonderfully fizzy that way.
I hope you will take to time enjoy a movie with your people and enjoy this new season. We are on fall break and haven’t gotten into much, with a college kiddo its hard to coordinate schedules. But I do feel a backyard wienie roast may be in our near future (since the county finally lifted the burn-ban). Now ya’ll go make a mess, I’ve to get supper started.
